Optimization Analysis

Design Optimization is a engineering process that delivers the strongest part or assembly, while reducing the overall weight and volume of the product. These analysis can provide designs that can operate in extreme enviroments or temperatures.

Why optimize a design

  1. Parts that are optimize typically cost less, because of material cost.
  2. Parts that weight less are less likely to cause ergonomic issues.
  3. What size radius is required to minimize a stress riser.
  4. How long does it take a engineer to come up with a optium design?

The video below was to flip a 700 lb piece of stainless steel around it's center of gravity. The design only had a limit of the location of the lifting points and the part center of gravity. A FEA was ran once to determine a base line FEA. A second analysis was constructed to optimize the design, by changing varables used to construct the part. A optimize design was completed in under thirty FEA in use under six minutes. The question most engingeering managers ask is how long would it take my engineers to come up with a similar design, the typical response is greater than forty hours.
